Meta Platforms' shares fell nearly 2% on Monday despite unveiling its ambitious 'Meta Compute' initiative, signaling investor skepticism about the social media giant's accelerated AI push. The decline came as CEO Mark Zuckerberg outlined plans to co-lead the project with infrastructure head Santosh Janardhan and AI strategist Daniel Gross.

The company is aggressively scaling data center capacity to support what Zuckerberg describes as 'frontier AI' development, with plans to build tens of gigawatts of energy infrastructure this decade. 'We're going all in on artificial general intelligence,' Zuckerberg declared on Threads, though markets responded with muted enthusiasm to the capital-intensive roadmap.

Meta simultaneously appointed former TRUMP administration official Dina Powell McCormick to oversee strategic initiatives, suggesting broader geopolitical considerations in its infrastructure expansion. The dual announcements highlight Meta's pivot from social media dominance to positioning itself as an AI hardware and research powerhouse.
